The English Language Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA) was conducted on 28th and 29th November 2021. A total of 1,681,769 pupils were registered for the SFNA assessment, whereas 1,560,935 (92.82%) sat for the assessment. 

The SFNA statistics indicate that 1,138,452 (72.94%) pupils passed the assessment indicating that this year's performance has decreased by 3.44 per cent, compared to the 2020 English Language Assessment, whereby a total of 1,828,265 pupils were registered for the assessment; 1,702,837 (93.16%) sat for the assessment and 1,300,497 (76.38%) passed.

Normaly the English Language assessment paper consisted of five (5) sections: A, B, C, D and E. The first four (4) sections comprised objective questions, and the last section which was E, comprised a short answer question, making a total of five (5) questions. Standard Four National Assessment (SFNA) English Examination Format

This format aims at assessing candidates’ competences, skills and attitudes in learning. The examination will assess how candidates use the attained competences and take part in simple conversations.

THE  GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The English assessment aims at testing candidates’ ability to:
  • Listen to a dictation and write the given words/sentences correctly.
  • Write simple grammatically correct sentences.
  • Read and complete sentences using correct English.
  • Read and comprehend a simple passage.

GENERAL COMPETENCES

The English assessment will measure the candidates’ competences on how to:
  • Express themselves appropriately in family, school and local environment settings and situations.
  • Communicate in simple routine tasks requiring simple exchange of information using all the four language skills. 

COMPOSITION OF ASSESSMENT PAPER

  • The English assessment paper will consist of sections A, B, C and D. Section A will be on Dictation, Section B on Vocabulary, Section C on Grammar and Section D on Comprehension.
  • The assessment paper will have a total of twenty five  (25) questions which will carry two (02) marks each, making a total of fifty (50) marks.
  • Candidates will be required to answer all questions. 
  • This paper will take 1:00 hour. The candidates with Visual Impairment will take 1:10 hours.

SECTION A: DICTATION

  • This section will comprise of five simple sentences for questions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to be dictated to pupils by a teacher. Each question will carry two (02) marks making a total of ten (10) marks in this section.
  • Candidates are required to listen and write the simple sentences dictated in the spaces provided correctly.

SECTION B: VOCABULARY

  • This section will comprise five (05) multiple choice questions. Each question will carry two (02) marks making a total of ten (10) marks in this section.
  • Candidates will be required to answer all questions by choosing the correct answer from options A, B, C and D.

SECTION C: GRAMMAR

  • This section will comprise of two parts, A and B. Part A will be on other forms of Grammar and will have five (05) filling-in the blank spaces questions with a choice of words provided in the box. Part B will be on Tenses and will also have five (05) filling-in the blank spaces questions using the correct form of the words in brackets. There will be a total of 10 questions in both parts A and B. Each question will carry two (02) marks making a total of twenty (20) marks in this section.
  • Candidates will be required to answer all questions by filling in the blank spaces with correct words.

SECTION D: COMPREHENSION

  • This section will comprise of a short passage which will be followed by five (05) questions which will either be multiple choice, gap filling or Wh-questions. Each question will carry two (02) marks making a total of ten (10) marks in this section.
  • Candidates will be required to answer all questions using the information from the passage.
