Manyara Region was established by Government Proclamation no. 367 issued on July 27, 2002 and published in the Government Gazette on August 2, 2002 after the division of the Arusha Region which before and during the Independence period was known as the Northern Province. Arusha Region officially started using the name in 1963. Among the districts that formed the Region are Mbulu and Maasailand which are mostly in the current Manyara Region.

The districts were divided as follows: - Mbulu District established Hanang District in 1969 and Hanang established Babati in 1985, while Maasailand District was divided into Kiteto District in 1974 which was also divided and established Simanjiro District in 1993. In addition, after the division for Arusha Region, Mbulu, Hanang ', Babati, Kiteto and Simanjiro Districts formed Manyara Region.
