The status of Lindi City as Headquarters ended shortly after Independence where the Southern Province became known as Mtwara Region. The headquarters became Mtwara City. Probably Mtwara Region was so large in the area that even the first Mtwara Regional Commissioner Mr. John Nzunda was saying: "I control a piece of land from the Indian Ocean Coast to Lake Nyasa and from the Ruvuma River to near the Rufiji River."Lindi Region is bordered by the Indian Ocean on the East, Coast Region on the North, Morogoro and Ruvuma on the West and Mtwara Region on the South.

Region's area lies below the Selous Game Reserve which is located in
